The importance of agitator in sludge treatment process


Sludge, as a byproduct of sewage treatment, contains a large amount of organic matter, heavy metals, and pathogenic microorganisms. Improper treatment can easily cause secondary pollution. In the entire process of sludge reduction, stabilization, harmlessness, and resource utilization, the agitator is one of the core auxiliary equipment. Its role runs through key links such as conditioning, digestion, and dewatering, directly affecting treatment efficiency, energy consumption, and final product quality. The importance of a mixer is analyzed from multiple aspects as follows:



1、 Sludge conditioning: the key to improving dewatering performance


Sludge conditioning is a pre step to improve dewatering characteristics, usually by adding coagulants (such as polyacrylamide), lime, or other conditioning agents to coagulate sludge particles into large flocs. In this stage, the core function of the agitator is to achieve uniform mixing of chemicals and sludge:


-If the mixing is insufficient, the agent will only react in a local area, resulting in uneven floc size, ineffective conditioning of some sludge, turbidity of the filtrate during dewatering, and high moisture content of the sludge cake (possibly exceeding 80%);


-If the stirring intensity is too high, it will break the formed flocs and reduce the dehydration efficiency.


Research has shown that using optimized mixing parameters (such as speed and mixing time) can increase the utilization rate of coagulants by more than 15%, reduce the moisture content of mud cakes by 3-5 percentage points, and significantly reduce the load and disposal costs of subsequent dehydration equipment.



2、 Anaerobic digestion: the core of enhancing microbial metabolism


Anaerobic digestion is the core process of sludge stabilization, which involves the decomposition of organic matter by anaerobic bacteria to produce methane (which can be utilized as a resource). The role of the mixer in this stage is reflected in three aspects:


1. Uniform mixing of substrates and microorganisms: Organic matter and anaerobic bacteria in sludge require sufficient contact for efficient metabolism. Mixing can avoid sludge stratification (bottom sedimentation, top floating slag) and ensure the contact area between microorganisms and substrates is maximized;


2. Maintain stable environmental parameters: Anaerobic digestion has strict requirements for temperature (around 35 ℃ for medium temperature and 55 ℃ for high temperature) and pH value (6.5-7.5). Stirring can evenly distribute the temperature and pH in the pool, avoiding local environmental imbalance and inhibiting microbial activity;


3. Promote gas release: Methane produced during the digestion process needs to escape from the sludge in a timely manner. Stirring can break the gas film on the surface of the sludge and reduce the impact of gas retention on microorganisms.


The data shows that effective agitation can increase anaerobic digestion efficiency by 20-30%, methane production by 15-25%, and shorten the digestion cycle (from around 20 days to within 15 days).



3、 Aerobic treatment: ensuring uniform distribution of dissolved oxygen


Aerobic treatment (such as aerobic digestion and MBR systems) relies on aerobic microorganisms to degrade organic matter, and it is necessary to maintain dissolved oxygen (DO) in the tank at 2-4mg/L. The function of a mixer is to:


-Suspend the sludge to avoid sedimentation;


-Promote sufficient contact between oxygen and sludge, ensure uniform distribution of dissolved oxygen, and prevent local hypoxia from causing a decrease in microbial activity or the production of odors (such as hydrogen sulfide).


For example, in MBR systems, agitators can prevent sludge accumulation on the surface of membrane components and extend membrane life; In aerobic digestion tanks, stirring can maintain uniform sludge concentration and improve organic matter degradation rate (up to 60% or more).



4、 Pre dehydration mixing: a step to optimize dehydration efficiency


Before dewatering, it is usually necessary to add conditioning agents (such as lime) or filter aids again. The mixer should ensure that the agents are evenly mixed with the sludge, providing ideal feed for equipment such as plate and frame pressure filtration and centrifugal dewatering. If the mixing is uneven:


-The feed concentration of the dewatering machine fluctuates greatly, which can easily lead to filter cloth blockage or poor centrifugal separation effect;


-The high moisture content of the mud cake increases transportation costs (for every 1% reduction in moisture content, transportation volume can be reduced by about 1.2%).


Reasonable mixing can stabilize the moisture content of the dehydrated mud cake below 75%, which meets the requirements of landfilling or incineration.



Precautions for mixer selection and operation


Different sludge treatment processes have different requirements for agitators:


-Mechanical stirring (blade type, turbine type): suitable for medium to high concentration sludge (such as anaerobic digestion tanks), can accurately control the stirring intensity;


-Pneumatic stirring (aeration stirring): suitable for large tanks, with low energy consumption and no mechanical wear, but limited mixing strength;


-Hydraulic mixing (jet mixing): suitable for low concentration sludge, easy to operate but requires a matching water pump.


During operation, it is necessary to adjust the mixing parameters (speed, power) according to the sludge concentration, tank size, and process requirements to avoid excessive or insufficient mixing. Regular maintenance (such as checking blade wear and bearing lubrication) can extend equipment life and ensure processing stability.



Conclusion


The agitator plays the role of a "catalyst" in sludge treatment, and its performance directly affects the efficiency and cost of each link. Reasonable selection and operation of agitators can not only improve the quality of sludge treatment (such as reducing moisture content and increasing methane production), but also reduce energy and chemical consumption, and assist in the resource utilization of sludge (such as making organic fertilizers and building materials). In today's increasingly strict environmental requirements, the importance of mixers will become more prominent, becoming an indispensable core equipment in sludge treatment systems.
